Higher Education Performance Marketing Case Study
How Better Audience Qualification Cut Cost per Enrollment in Half
A national nonprofit online university reduced the cost per enrollment for an advanced nursing degree program from approximately $14,000 to $7,000 by aligning its paid media targeting and messaging with the qualifications prospective students actually needed.

At a Glance
Organization: National nonprofit online university
Program: Advanced nursing degree program
My Role: Senior Marketing Manager
My Responsibilities: Performance diagnosis, targeting strategy, messaging refinement, platform strategy, campaign execution, optimization, and junior team oversight
Result: Cost per enrollment reduced by approximately 50%, from $14,000 to $7,000
The Challenge
The advanced nursing program was generating enrollments at an unsustainable cost of approximately $14,000 each.
The campaigns were reaching people with a general interest in healthcare and nursing, but many were not yet far enough along in their education or careers to qualify for the degree.
The problem was not simply that advertising costs were high. The audience and message were attracting prospective students who were unlikely to become eligible applicants.
My Role
As Senior Marketing Manager, I owned the program’s paid media strategy and platform-level execution within a budget established by the university’s senior marketing leadership and finance department.
I diagnosed the mismatch between the campaign targeting and the program’s admissions requirements, developed the revised targeting and messaging approach, and completed most of the campaign execution myself.
I also directed a junior marketing manager who supported several account initiatives under my oversight.
The Approach
Identify the Qualification Gap
I evaluated the existing targeting against the professional and educational background required for the degree program.
The analysis showed that the campaigns were reaching too many people who may have been interested in nursing but were not yet qualified to pursue this particular degree. That created wasted spend and contributed to the high cost per enrollment.
Refine the Audience
I narrowed the targeting to focus on prospective students whose existing education and nursing experience made them more likely to qualify for the program.
This shifted the campaign away from broad healthcare interest and toward audience signals that better reflected actual enrollment eligibility.
Align the Messaging
Targeting alone would not solve the problem if the advertising continued to speak to an overly broad audience.
I refined the campaign messaging to better communicate the program’s purpose and intended student, helping qualified prospects recognize the opportunity while allowing less relevant audiences to self-select out.
Optimize at the Platform Level
I implemented and managed the revised campaign strategy within the approved budget, monitoring performance and adjusting the account based on enrollment efficiency rather than surface-level traffic metrics.
A junior marketing manager supported portions of the account under my direction, while I retained responsibility for the strategy, execution standards, and overall performance.
Results
Cost per enrollment decreased from approximately $14,000 to $7,000
Enrollment efficiency improved by approximately 50%
Paid media targeting became more closely aligned with program eligibility
Campaign messaging more clearly addressed qualified prospective students
The improvement came from diagnosing the underlying audience problem rather than treating the high acquisition cost as a bidding or platform issue alone.
What This Demonstrates
This work demonstrates my ability to look beyond platform metrics and identify the business condition driving poor performance.
The campaign did not need more traffic or broader reach. It needed a more accurate definition of the prospective student and messaging that reflected the program’s actual qualification requirements.
By connecting admissions criteria, audience strategy, campaign messaging, and platform execution, I helped the university substantially improve enrollment efficiency without claiming ownership of budget decisions made by senior leadership.
